Hi guys, this time I'm gonna talk about a movie, a
very dramatic movie. An aunt of mine recommend it to me like 5 years ago and I
watched it last year.
This movie made me burst in tears so badly, I had to
pause the movie several times because I couldn't breathe, I cried a lot. I
spill more tears than in all other films together, this is like if your
feelings were getting ripped, and you can't stop watching because you want to
cry more, at least that is what happened to me.
The movie is a musical drama, I usually don't enjoy
musicals but I could ignore the music easily, this is not an American movie, is
a foreign one and that's why is so different; the illumination, the music and
all that. I didn't wanted to watch it at first but at the end I was like
OMFG!!.
The story sets in Washington state in 1964 and focuses
on Selma Ježková, a Czech immigrant who has moved to the United States with her
son and works at a factory with her friend Cvalda. Selma and her son live in
poverty and doesn't have a house, they rent a trailer from a policeman(Bill)
who lives beside the trailer with his wife (Linda).
Selma has a hereditary disease that is gradually
causing her to go blind, and get worse when she get stressed. She has been
saving every penny that she makes, in a cookie metal box, that money is for
paying an surgery which will prevent her son from losing his sight. No one
knows of his disease, not Cvalda and not even her son, because if the boy knews
he could get worried and that would make the disease's effects affect him
sooner.
No one in her work should know about it because if
they knew she's incompetent she could lose her work, and she was pretty sure
that she'll never find a new job again.
She and her neighbors (Bill and Linda) had a good
relationship, Linda helped her so much, she cared her son when she was working all day, and at his birthday the couple bought him a bicycle.
The important part of the movie is when the Bill ask
Selma for money, 'cause he was broke and
didn't want Linda knew about it, Selma refuse, telling him that she
didn't have any money, so he pretends to leave the trailer and stay in silence
inside, he knew somehow taht Selma couldn't see him. At this moment Selma was
already completely blind and she didn't realize that the man was still in the
house, she feels a presence in the house and suspect that the man is in there
so she start saying "hello, hello", when nobody answers she takes the money she earned that day and
put it into the box, and then goes to sleep. The policeman take Selma's money
and go home.
The next day Selma makes a mistake at her work, she
knew perfectly every move she had to do at her work, that was why nobody
realized she was blind, but recently she
was getting distracted and having
hallucinations 'cause the disease, the thing is that she broke a machine, and
her boss realize she was blind and he fired her.
She went back home following the train tracks. She was
going to take her son the the doctor so he did the surgery, but when she wanted
to count the money she discover the money was gone, she goes to Bill house to
demand Bill to give her money back, what she didnt know was that Bill had
"confessed" to Linda that he was having an affair with Selma and she
was going crazy, so when Linda opens the door she didnt let her in. Somehow she
get in and go upstairs to Bill's office and finds him there, he didnt want to
give her the money, she starts screaming, so Bill ask Linda to call the police,
when Linda go out of the house to go to the closer phone box, Bill take his
work gun and give it to Selma, and tell her that the money is on the desk and
if she want it money she had to kill him. He put the gun in Selma's hand, put
the gun on his temple and say her "come on, shoot me, is our only way
out". She knows is the only way that his son can have the surgery so she
shoot him, take the money and go to the doctor to give him the money, and say
him that his son was going to go for the surgery in the future and he had to
cure him.
The police get to Bill's house and find him dead,
Selma was pursued, found and sended to prison, and finally she was sentenced to
the death penalty for stealing the money and kill a police officer. She tell
the police the truth but she doesn't have an alibi and no one believe her,
except for her friends and her son.
She has the opportunity of pay a bail and not die, she could live the rest
of her life in prission, but the only money she had was the money she gave the
doctor, Cvalda goes to talk with the doctor and he is open to give her a refund.
Selma had then two options: To keep living and let his son
get blind in the future or, give him the surgery and accept to die. She had to decide if HIS SON WAS GOING TO
HAVE A MOTHER OR HIS EYES.
The movie shows how the iniquities can take life's
away, and especially to the immigrants in that time. If you like to cry with
movies you can watch it, if you don't.. then don't even bother.
I ALMOST CRY WITH ONLY REMEMBER IT!! T.T
